Thanks for tuning into the Queen's Health Outreach Kenya Project '09 Blog. I just want to start of by thanking everyone for their support for our adventure, this Project wouldn't have been possible without you. I promise to keep my posts short, as I know that people can't devote 45 minutes out of their day to hear what I ate for breakfast that day, but I will update it frequently with stories, updates on the project and my own perspectives.
I'm incredibly excited to be embarking on our adventure. Our plane leaves this afternoon so I should probably start packing.

Reduced HIV transmission among youth and an HIV/AIDS-free youth generation for Kenya and the world.

To establish Peer Education programs among organized youth groups and schools. Also, to develop and utilize teaching materials and information on selected topics including: HIV/AIDS, Abuse, Responsible Sexuality, Abstinence, Life Skills, Gender and Discrimination, Relationships and Boundaries, Self-esteem and Youth Empowerment. This collaborative effort aims to promote positive behavior change among youth.

A Partnership of Youth For Youth
Our six week training is implemented by the joint efforts of Queen's Health Outreach East Africa (QHO) and Youth Empowerment Strategic Scheme (YESS), a Nairobi-based grassroots youth organization. QHO is a registered charitable organization that is exclusively managed and operated by student volunteers from Queen.s University in Kingston, Ontario. YESS is registered with the Kenyan government as an independent youth group and is comprised of students and recent graduates of universities in East Africa. This year, YESS is expanding to include trainers from at least 3 universities in 2 countries. The 2008 project will be facilitated by the joint efforts of Canadian, Kenyan, and Tanzanian university students. This summer's training will be implemented in Rongai, Kenya, a rural-urban area in the Rift Valley Province.After training is completed, YESS members increase our impact and sustainability by establishing after school clubs for trained students where they continue to offer resources andsupport related to our teaching topics. They facilitate opportunities for students to contribute positively to their communities. Examples of past events include organizing community cleanups and volunteering in homes for children with HIV/AIDS. This continued outreach ensures thatour project not only provides short-term educational training but also provides long-term support and fosters continual personal growth in the youth.
